Inviting Voice—The HR Mediator’s Role to Set the Stage

By Kim Faithcloth, PhD and Dawn Bedlivy, Esq.

HR professionals play a crucial role in facilitating conversations between conflicting parties in the workplace. The key to successful mediation lies in creating an environment that encourages open dialogue and mutual respect. This approach, known as Invitational Mediation, focuses on inviting both parties to share their perspectives while being witnessed by the other.

Preparing for Mediation

To set the stage for effective mediation, HR should:

  1.  Conduct preliminary meeting with each party/li>
  2.  Establish clear ground rules
  3.  Create a respectful setting for the conversation

The goal of invitational mediation is not to impose solutions but to empower participants to collaboratively devise a way forward.

Key Principles of Invitational Mediation

  • Respect:  Encourage courteous behavior and active listening.
  • Confidentiality:  Stress the importance of keeping discussions private.
  • Voluntary participation: Ensure participants feel comfortable and free to take breaks if needed.
  • Honesty and Transparency:  Foster trust through open communication.
  • One Speaker at a Time:  Promote effective communication by avoiding interruptions.
  • Solution-Focus:   Guide the conversation towards future-oriented solutions rather than dwelling on past issues.

Managing emotions:

Effective HR mediators should:

  • Reframe emotional moments as opportunities for exploration.
  • Encourage parties to express their feeling sand perspectives.
  • Acknowledge progress, especially when discussions shift towards future possibilities.

By following these principles, HR mediators can create a safe and productive environment for conflict resolution, fostering better workplace relationships and promoting a culture of open communication.
